"Hans Sautter"Bio:
Hans Sautter was born on 6 April 1912. His specialist training took place at the University Eye Hospital in Tübingen. He habilitated as early as 1940 and was appointed an unscheduled professor in 1947. In 1953 he was appointed to the Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of Hamburg. He refused an appointment to Heidelberg in 1958 and to Munich in 1965 because he was fascinated by the new building of the Hamburg University Eye Clinic as a life task. This clinic was decisively planned by him and, despite many difficulties, realized as one of the most modern in the world, benefiting from his special gift of well thought-out organization.
Hans Sautter was primarily a clinician. Numerous publications have, in a wide variety, dealt with our subject and were also reflected in a number of publications of the Karger publishing house, to which he was particularly connected: He was editor of the "Advances in Ophthalmology" for many years and, until his death, editor of "Ophthalmologica". In addition to experimental and clinical questions of circulatory disorders, especially at the back of the eye - where his publications on arteriosclerotic diseases of the retinal center are of particular importance - his other work deals mainly with problems of keratoplasty, glaucoma and cataract surgery. A microsurgical facility co-developed by him testifies to an attitude of true progress, even in the later years of his work in Hamburg. His book on the morphology of lens opacities remains a standard work, and he has also published two atlases on diseases of the ocular fundus. Hans Sautter's publications have made a significant and lasting contribution to the continuing education of our generation of ophthalmologists. He has set many new accents. Hans Sautter's school continues to exist: three of his students are professors, eight other chief physicians of eye clinics or eye departments. Numerous former assistants in private practice owe him their practical, solid specialist training. Hans Sautter was always available to his students and friends without restrictions even after his retirement. We will miss his wise advice in the future. The always self-evident authority corresponded to the relationship with his staff and patients, whom he approached with open-mindedness, warmth and care. He was also characterised by the openness of his encounters and by his cheerful conviviality and hospitality.
