"Cheryl L Barnes"Bio:
Professional: I earned a BS in biology from San Diego State University, an MS in marine science from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, and a PhD in fisheries from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I have also served as a program and outreach director in the nonprofit sector, program representative for California Sea Grant, and lead scientist for the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program. I now work for the University of Washington, in collaboration with NOAA Fisheries. I also serve as the principal investigator for scale back consulting, LLC.
My academic and professional background includes field- and lab-based fisheries research, statistical modeling, spatial ecology, marine science education, and community outreach. I am most interested in work that enhances our understanding about harvested stocks, thereby supporting sustainable resource management. I also work to build bridges between ecologists and quantitative scientists and integrate various user groups in fisheries science.
Personal: Apart from fish, I am passionate about enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM. I wholeheartedly believe in the power of visibility. Thus, I share that I was a first generation college student from a working class family. I also identify as a queer woman. I strive to bring my authentic self into my work, confront my own implicit biases, and use my privilege to support others whenever possible.
