Bio:

George Gray (1924 - 1999) pioneered the exploration of brain ultrastructure making seminal discoveries that included the recognition of the two fundamental types of brain synapses, termed Gray Type 1 and Gray Type 2, which, in later work with Jack Diamond he showed to be equivalent to excitatory and inhibitory synapses. Along with Sanford (Sandy) Palay George Gray made many of the key observations that defined synaptic ultrastructure, including the recognition of the postsynaptic density (PSD) and the spine apparatus, on which our modern understanding of synaptic transmission in the central nervous system is based.
