In 1950 Eugene Roberts reported the discovery of GABA in the brain and went on to pioneer GAD immunohistochemistry with light and electron microscopy.

He received his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Michigan in 1943 under the supervision of Professor H.C. Eckstein.
