Bio:

Dr. Joseph S. Gots joined the Penn faculty as an assistant professor of microbiology in 1951. Four years later he was promoted to associate professor of microbiology in medicine and in 1963 was promoted to professor. He became emeritus in 1987, but continued to teach until 1993. A devoted professor, he took a sabbatical leave the year that his son, Dr. Ronald E. Gots C’64 M’68, took microbiology so that he would not have to be his son’s teacher, Ronald recalled. In 1968 he received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching. He also headed the 25-Year Club during the 1980-81 academic year. While at Penn Dr. Gots conducted research on genetics. He is known as being among the first microbiologists to study modern genetics before the discovery of DNA.
