Bartolomeo was the grandson of Niccolo da Santa Sophia, a pupil of Pietro d'Abano. Nicolò Santa Sofia taught in Padua from 1311 to 1350
Bartolomeo was a son of Giovanni di Santa Sofìa (1330 circa- 1389), who was the successor of Pietro d'Abano, and who was the older brother of Marsiglio da Santa Sofia (d 1405 c.)
Bartolomeo was a younger brother of Galeazzo di Santa Sofia († 1427), who taught in Vienna for some time
