Hans Sautter was born on 6 April 1912. His specialist training took place at the University Eye Hospital in Tübingen. He habilitated as early as 1940 and was appointed an unscheduled professor in 1947. In 1953 he was appointed to the Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of Hamburg. He refused an appointment to Heidelberg in 1958 and to Munich in 1965 because he was fascinated by the new building of the Hamburg University Eye Clinic as a life task. This clinic was decisively planned by him and, despite many difficulties, realized as one of the most modern in the world, benefiting from his special gift of well thought-out organization.
