Grant K. Smith, Professor Emeritus, Psychology, died on July 1, 2011, after a long illness. Grant grew up in Montreal and studied at McGill University where he obtained his PhD in physiology in 1961.
He then spent three years in the Autonomics Division of the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, England, where he pursued his research on neural physiology. He was appointed to McMaster's Department of Psychology in 1964 and although he always insisted that he was “a physiologist, not a psychologist” he was soon at home in the department and eventually served as its chair from 1993 to 1996, after which he retired.
Grant was active in the work of the Faculty Association and was President in 1990/91 when the litigation on the issue of the University's holiday from
