Allen and his wife, the late Beatrice "Trixie" Gardner, were pioneers in the study of language learning in chimpanzees, first with the Washoe project and later (in the late 70's) with the second project involving Moja, Pili, Dar, and Tatu. More info on the project is at www.friendsofwashoe.org
