Van Doeveren was an early proponent of smallpox inoculation. In 1774 he personally inoculated Prince Willem Frederik, the later King Willem I of the Netherlands, using variola inoculation, at the request of his tutor Gaubius who was personal physician of Prince Willem V . This was more than 20 years before Edward Jenner popularized cow-pox vaccine in England.

Note: Both A.J. van der Aa and P.J. Blok, P.C. Molhuysen mention that Van Doeveren used cowpox matter for his inoculations. However, G.C.B. Suringar clearly states that Van Doeveren was using human smallpox matter instead. The letter of Van Doeveren himself to Eduard Sandifort leaves no question whatsoever that Van Doeveren was using human smallpox matter for his inoculations. This is important, because cowpox inoculation (vaccination) is a safer procedure than inoculation with human smallpox matter (variolation). In some cases the latter procedure caused the patient to die, and there was actually a risk that variolation would trigger an epidemic. For those reasons the procedure was performed with great care, and only if there was already an epidemic in town. In his letter Van Doeveren describes in some detail the various precautions he took to diminish chances of an adverse outcome.
