Odete A. Beirão da Cruz e Silva, PhD

Medical Sciences University of Aveiro, Aveiro, Aveiro, Portugal
Alzheimer's disease, Molecular Biomedicine

Dr. da Cruz e Silva is presently a Professor at the University of Aveiro, and Director of the Biomedical Sciences in the Health Sciences Department. The PhD research work, which resulted in the cloning of the protein phosphatases, was carried out at the University of Dundee, a Signal Transduction laboratory headed by Prof. P. Cohen. Subsequently research continued in the Neurosciences with Prof. Paul Greengard and Prof. Sam Gandy at the Rockefeller University, before returning to Portugal where Dr. da Cruz e Silva set up her own research group. The main area of scientific activity has been the pursuit of the molecular basis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and the underlying signalling mechanisms which may contribute to this pathology. Precise signalling mechanisms contributing to altered intracellular responses such as abnormal APP processing, in particular Abeta production, have been addressed. The long term goal is to identify signal transduction players which can potentially provide novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Consequently several novel APP binding proteins have been identified. Present research interests also address mechanisms affecting Abeta aggregation, which again may provide novel therapeutic strategies. The researcg group has been successful in participating in three European projects with more than 40 European research groups with whom we collaborate.
