I completed my Bachelors degree in Life Sciences from Queen’s University, and had the opportunity to work with Dr. Eric Dumont on the role of the BNST in the affective component of pain, serving as my first taste of neuroscience research. For my graduate studies, I decided to join the lab of Dr. Rachel Tyndale in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Toronto and the Centre for Addiction and Mental health, hoping to build upon my knowledge of the brain by studying the expression and function of a largely unknown enzyme subfamily in the brain. During my Ph.D. studies, I developed an animal model of selective modulation of brain CYPs, and used this model to show, for the first time, that local metabolism by CYPs in the brain can meaningfully alter the disposition of, and response to, a centrally acting substrate. During my post-doctoral fellowship at Dartmouth College with Dr. Alan Green, working on animal models of dual diagnosis schizophrenia and alcohol abuse. At the University of Guelph, studying the chicken-or-egg problem of co-morbid mental health and addictions.
