Juan José Segura-Sampedro, MD, PhD, native from Seville (1985), is a member of the Department of General and Digestive Surgery, University Hospital Son Espases in Palma de Mallorca (Spain) and associate professor of Surgery at Universidad de las Islas Baleares In 2009, he received his medical degree from Seville University. He joined University Hospital Virgen del Rocio resident program in 2010, where he conducted his training on General & Digestive Surgery, taking part in the Liver Transplant Program of this center. He has completed his learning and performed part of his research in prestigious foreign institutions as Georg-August-Universität in Göttingen (Germany) and St Mark’s Hospital & Northwich Park in London (United Kingdom). He conducted his research as part of the “Advanced surgery and transplant, cell therapy and bioengineering applied to surgery” research group of Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS). There, he focused his inquiry on alginate-based biomaterials and growth factors for tissue regeneration, his work on this field, using PRGF in fistula-in-ano, granted him a PhD Cum laude by the University of Seville in 2016. He is an enthusiast of innovation, what has granted him two patents. He taught surgery at Faculty of Medicine, Cardenal Herrera University, Castellón during 2 years. After that he earned the position of Associate Professor of surgery at Universitat de les Illes Balears. He has also obtained the accreditation as Tenured Associate Professor (Acreditación Profesor Contratado Doctor) by the Balearic University Quality Assurance Agency (AQUIB). Since he joined Hospital Universitatio Son Espases, his research has been focused on oncologic surgery (cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC) and trauma surgery, describing the Balconing phenomena. He is part of the WSES Spanish Chapter, he is ATLS certified instructor, he hosts the emergency surgery local course of the Spanish Association of Surgeons and has patented a new device for liver trauma surgery. He has also published over 60 papers and book chapters in national and international journals and presented more than 100 podium presentations in congresses. He is also a member of several associations, obtaining different awards and scholarships from Spanish and regional surgical societies and from University Hospital Son Espases.
