Professor Völcker was born in 1943 in Königsberg in East Prussia and completed his medical studies at the universities of Hamburg, Würzburg and Kiel. After his specialist training at the University Clinic Hamburg and his habilitation in 1976 in Tübingen, Völcker became Senior Physician and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Erlangen in 1980. After several guest lecturers abroad, including at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, he was appointed professor of ophthalmology at the University of Heidelberg in 1986 and succeeded Professor Dr. Wolfgang Jäger.

His focus was on cataracts and corneal diseases.

As an ophthalmologist, Völcker made a name for himself above all by researching and treating diseases of the anterior segment of the eye. Whether cataract or glaucoma, corneal transplantation or the treatment of tumours - it has always been his concern to use his ophthalmological skills for the benefit of patients. This is how Professor Dr. J. Rüdiger Siewert, Executive Medical Director and Chairman of the Management Board of the University Hospital Heidelberg, describes Professor Völcker as an outstanding personality who has always placed people at the centre of his work.

In addition to his work in patient care, research and teaching also shaped his life. He has published more than 300 scientific papers; 16 habilitations, 2 chairs and 4 chief physicians have been published under his leadership. He always received top marks from his students for his lectures, which always begin at 7.30 am in the summer as well as in the winter semester.

In 2008, the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG) appointed him an honorary member. From 1986 to 2005, Völcker was an honorary secretary, member of the board and editor of the journal "Der Ophthalmologe" (The Ophthalmologist) within the DOG, which he further developed conceptually with great success.
