Bio:

Kirchhof (born 1952) had accepted the appointment to the chair of his boss Prof. Klaus Heimann, who died in 1999, at the University Eye Clinic in Cologne in January 2001.

Kirchhof had previously held the Aachen Chair of Ophthalmology and was Director of the University Eye Clinic of RWTH Aachen University since 1996, succeeding Prof. Martin Reim. Kirchhof had expanded operative retinology there. During his term of office, outpatient cataract surgery was also introduced in Aachen - driven mainly by Kirchhof's then senior physician Prof. Martin Wenzel.

Kirchhof's clinical and scientific focus is on diseases of the posterior segment of the eye. Recent publications as first or co-author deal with cell transplantation in AMD, diseases of the vitreoretinal interface, silicone oil surgery or the comparison of ocular parameters in former premature or mature newborns.

Kirchhof officially retired on October 1st, but will continue to lead the PRIVENT study as clinical trial leader until his successor is appointed (PRIVENT: Prophylactic intravitreal administration of 5-fluorouracil and heparin to prevent proliferative vitreoretinopathy in high-risk patients with primary rhegmatogenic retinal detachment).
