Nagel studied eye diseases at Albrecht von Graefe in Berlin, became a private professor in 1864 in Tübingen, in 1867 an extraordinary, in 1874 a professor and director of the university eye clinic. He has written, among others: Das Sehen mit zwei Augen (1861), Die Refraction and Accommodation Anomalies of Auges (1866), Die Anomalien der Refraction and Accommodation of Auges in Graefe and Saemisch: Handbuch der gesammten Augenheilkunde (1880). Finally, he published the first 8 volumes of the Nagels Jahresbericht (1871-78) and since 1880 Mittheilungen aus der ophthalmiatrischen Klinik in Tübingen.
