Bio:

(1811 - 1866)
GODDARD, Paul Beck, anatomist, was born in Baltimore, Md., Jan. 26, 1811. He was graduated at Washington (Trinity) college, Hartford, in 1828, and received the medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania, in 1832. A brief general professional practice in Philadelphia was followed by his appointment as assistant to Dr. Robert Hare (q.v.), professor of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania. Later he was professor of anatomy. His most notable achievement was his work in photography, which followed the first announcement of Daguerre's discovery. He sought to shorten the time of exposure of the sensitized plates by increasing the sensitivity of the silver plate, using the vapors of bromine for the purpose, and succeeded in producing instantaneous pictures as early as December 1839.
