Fernando Avila-Rencoret is a Ph.D. candidate at the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery and the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London.
After obtaining a medical degree from Pontificia Universidad Catolica in Chile, Fernando spent 5 years working as a graduate researcher at the McGowan Insitute for Regenerative Medicine (U. of Pittsburgh), and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, both in Pittsburgh, PA, USA.
In 2014, Fernando earned a Master of Research degree in Medical Robotics and Image Guided Intervention at the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London.
Currently, at the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial, his Ph.D. research is focused on the development of robotic imaging technologies for endoscopic use, under the supervision of Dan Elson (physicist), George Mylonas (robotics engineer), Julian Teare (expert endoscopist) and Ara Darzi (Colorectal surgeon).
