EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF WIND - INDUCED VIBRATIONS IN ANTENNA MEMBERS
William Weaver , Jr.
Steady wind flow acting upon a structural member induces lateral vibrations in the member due to the generation of lift forces associated with the shedding of vortices from alternating sides . When the frequency of vortex shedding is approximately equal to the natural frequency of the member , resonant vibrations result which are amplified to a certain extent by the selfexciting nature of the oscillations . Stresses caused by severe and frequent vibrations have resulted in failures in a variety of types of structures .
