It inherently gives a superior signal-to-noise ratio and offers more flexibility. The planned research is a continuation of previous NSF supported work (ECS-8212472) exploring aspects of image processing with incoherent light. The image processing operations will be based upon interferometry using extended source and polychromatic light. Work will concentrate on three major topics: First is an extension of incoherent spatial filtering, wherein arbitrary transfer functions are generated, comparable to those possible with coherent optics. Second is a process whereby the image properties, including resolution, are controlled by a parallel aperture, through which no light from the object passes. This prospect leads to superresolution, whereby the object light passes through a small aperture, yet is not degraded in resolution. 1990 — 1993	Leith, Emmett	N/AActivity Code Description: No activity code was retrieved: click on the grant title for more information	New Methods For Imaging Into and Through Inhomogeneous Media @ University of Michigan Ann Arbor Image formation in and through irregular media, ranging from atmospheric inhomogeneities to the very difficult case of diffusely scattering media such as human tissue, remains a major challenge of image science. The range of technology that has been brought to bear on these problems is considerable, including active adaptive optics, image deconvolution, phase retrieval and phase conjugation. The present work proposes various ideas for imaging through inhomogeneities and for imaging objects embedded within inhomogeneities. The first category, imaging through inhomogeneities, embodies extensions of a technique recently developed by the principal investigator for imaging through inhomogeneities using a superresolution technique. The goal is to extend this capability in various ways, in particular, to eliminate the need for an aberration- free path from source to the mixer, which can be accomplished by combining spatial and temporal encoding techniques. The second category is the imaging of objects embedded within the inhomogeneity. Several techniques are proposed, such as confocal scanning with the use of extremely short pulses of light. We propose using for this undertaking a sophisticated imaging system, comprising a cooled CCD camera, a computer, and extensive software we develped. In addition, the equipment and the proposed techniques are to be developed for a range of other imaging areas, including optical sectioning, phase contrast imaging, and a multiple-wavelenght depth contrast imaging, and a multiple-wavelength depth contouring. *** Show summary Hide summary	1
