New Psychometric Methods For Substance Abuse Research @ University of California Los Angeles DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): This is a revised submission of a request for the competing continuation of a K05 Senior Scientist Award. The aims of the proposed five-year research program are primarily theoretical, namely to develop new psychometric methods for drug abuse research;apply these newly developed methods to important drug abuse data sets;and do science education on these topics. This proposal describes a research program on the development and application of new multivariate psychometric and statistical techniques that hold special promise for improving the quality of psychosocial, social, behavioral, epidemiological, and functional imaging health-related research on drug use and abuse. Standard multivariate methods may not be applicable to nonexperimental drug abuse data, and to a lesser extent experimental data, because these may contain selectivity, outlier cases, arbitrary distributions, errors in measurement, hierarchical sampling plans, small samples, dependent observations, and related problems. This proposal aims to develop new methods that can enable researchers to reach reliable scientific conclusions with such problematic data. Special attention is given to structural equation models that may involve latent variables in mediation and moderator relations, and the development of methods for using item response theory measurement models with latent variable structural relations. New methods that are developed will be evaluated for applicability to real data with simulation research and will be applied to existing data sets. No data will be gathered under this grant, but applications to important substantive issues in drug abuse will be sought in association with NIDA/UCLA program project grant P01 DA01070, via collaboration with nationally active and UCLA-based substance abuse researchers working on their own projects, and by cooperation with NIDA and other health-related agencies. Drug Abuse Etiologies and Consequences @ University of California Los Angeles The program project proposal represents an integrated attempt to apply "state-of-the-art" methodologies for theory testing with naturally occurring phenomena to the comparative assessment of theories for drug abuse antecedents and consequences. Many important questions regarding the etiology and consequences of drug use and abuse must be studied in naturally occurring contexts. Typical experimental methods that assign subjects randomly to conditions of drug use leading to various degrees of abuse are unethical. Animal models and biochemical methods also cannot address many important questions, such as the psychosocial, financial, and generally disruptive effects of drug use. Nonetheless, it is critical to compare and contrast theories that attempt to explain drug-taking etiologies and consequences. This program project consists of six interrelated research studies that develop, compare, and contrast numerous theoretical models in new and existing databases from psychology, epidemiology, psychiatry, education, and sociology, using modern multivariate psychometric/statistical methods to control for artifacts and competing hypotheses. Under the umbrella of the program project, these studies are both theory-driven and relevant to drug use, yet range from the development of new statistical methods to analyze drug abuse data, to a unique effort to study the dynamics of gang membership. The Models and Methods Project is extending the state-of-the-art in latent variable modeling to a variety of types of data. The Longitudinal Consequences Project tests theories of long-term consequences of drug use through a 20-year follow-up of a large sample of adolescents, and adds a community sample to cross-validate findings. The Collaborative Project works with investigators who have generated over a dozen valuable epidemiological and longitudinal datasets to answer a variety of questions about the etiology and consequences of drug use. The African-American Drug Abuse Project is a longitudinal study contrasting those adolescents at high risk for drug use and abuse with others in their community. The Memory and Cognitive Processes in Drug Abuse Project uses contemporary psychological theories on memory and cognition to improve and test theories of drug use. The Computer Intensive Hypothesis Testing Project uses computer simulation to provide near-exact test performance for standard statistics that behave badly on drug abuse data. The Core Project integrates all components, hosts visiting scholars, and provides free computer access to national drug abuse researchers. Collaborative Studies Among At-Risk Populations @ University of California Los Angeles The major purpose of this project is to collaborate with national investigators and NIDA in the confirmatory multivariate analysis of approximately 30 important data sets to test drug abuse theories using innovative modern statistical methods. This is done by locating significant existing drug abuse data sets collected among dysfunctional, at-risk populations that have not been fully analyzed, particularly with newer theory-testing methods; performing meaningful analyses of these data using plausible models and theoretical frameworks; and, based on these analyses, preparing well-researched and well-written reports for scientific publication in collaboration with the original researchers who generated the data. Models and Methods Project @ University of California Los Angeles The primary aim of the proposed research program is to develop new psychometric methods for drug abuse, AIDS, and policy research. Methods to be developed include correct missing data methodologies, robust methodologies, distribution-free methods and a variety of other latent variable modeling methods applicable to the analysis of real drug abuse data, such as badly distributed nonnormal variables. These methods are then applied to import drug abuse datasets. In order to disseminate the results at various levels of technical detail, nontechnical papers and practical improvements in methodology are also developed. Tutorials to improve methodology in drug abuse research are also given, and drug abuse and health researchers and government agencies are advised on the methodology research results and its implications.
