Research Interests
Our research focuses on the cellular and subcellular mechanisms of pyramidal neuronal and vascular wall cell damage during the development of Alzheimer’s diseases (AD) and the future new wave of treatments for this devastating disease. We have shown the ultrastructural and molecular mechanisms of the features in the changes on mitochondria (DNA deletion, Cytochrome C Oxidase activity, and redox activity (Fe)), protein modification and oxidation (HNE) and RNA (8OHG) oxidation during normal aging (in a dog model of aging), stroke (cardiac arrest and resuscitation), and in transgenic mouse models of AD and human AD by using in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry techniques at the light and electron microscopic levels. Selective mitochondrial antioxidant (e.g., lipoic acid and l-carnitine) will also be tested in different experimental models for future application in future clinical trials of these compounds as an alternative prophylactic and treatment strategy for neurodegeneration, cardio- and cerebrovascular diseases. The biochemical properties of these protein activities are also of interest in our ongoing research.
