Adler was a fellow of American Psychological Association Divisions 1 (Society for General Psychology), 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology), and 26 (History of Psychology). From 1972 to 1986, he was the secretary-general of the Section on Comparative Psychology of the International Union of Biological Sciences. He also served as chair of the Section on Psychology of the New York Academy of Sciences. In 1991, he received the Wilhelm Wundt Award from the New York State Psychological Association for his contributions to academic psychology.
