Born in 1860 in Toronto, Canada. BA University of Toronto under James Paxton Young. Began MA at Johns Hopkins under G. Stanley Hall. Finished MA at Harvard under George Herbert Palmer and William James. Hired as professor of ethics and the history of philosophy at University of Toronto in 1889. Travelled to Freiburg to earn a PhD, which he did under Alois Riehl in 1891. Also worked in Hugo Münsterberg's experimental psychology laboratory. Continued at Toronto until retirement in 1926.
