It is with a sad heart that I report the news of the passing of what the icons of pediatric pulmonology. Dr William Waring, Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics, Tulane University, passed quietly in his sleep earlier today [2/27/2023] at the age of 99.

Dr Waring received his medical degree from Harvard during World War II. Interestingly, he had not yet received an undergraduate degree. Due to the war, promising undergraduates were moved directly into medical school. He thus was one of the only American physicians in the 20th century to complete medical school without an undergraduate degree. Many years later, after his retirement from medicine, he went back and received his undergraduate degree from Tulane.

He completed his residency at John's Hopkins where, I understand, he was instrumental in producing the 1st edition of the Harriet Lane Handbook which pediatric residents depended on for many years.
